Hello, World!

Phil Bundy - Click here for photo galleryToday, I am embarking on a quest to achieve my dream of playing on the PGA Tour. To echo Tiger Woods from his first press conference as a professional in 1996, I say “Hello, World!”

I fell in love with the game of golf at age nine when participating in my first junior golf clinic in 1975. As a junior golfer, I won my state high school championship by a record margin. In college, I was a member of the 1986 NCAA Championship golf team at Wake Forest University.

On the way to turning pro, life got in the way. My father died, and I returned home to be with my mother and family. Next, I earned an MBA and started the long process of building a company. Then came marriage, family, and home.

A few years ago on my 40th birthday, I took my toddler Charlie to the golf course. Watching his joy as he ran across the fairway, he provided the inspiration to renew my childhood dream of playing professional golf against the world’s best players.

Over the past couple of years and after nearly two decades away from competitive golf, I began preparing by working on my game and playing in mini tour events. Making progress, I won two small events on the National Golf Tour.

Now at age 43, I will play in open qualifiers on the PGA Tour and, hopefully, the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament in the fall.

For me, my effort is not about winning major championships but about learning the answer to the question, “Can I make it on the Tour?” During my quest, I will learn the answer to that question.

In the near future, I will share much more information about my quest, and throughout my journey, I will update my blog much like an embedded reporter or solo journalist (aka “SoJo”). I look forward to receiving your comments and feedback, and I hope you will join me by subscribing to the blog and following me on Twitter at @PhilBundy.

Until next time, enjoy golf, America!

Phil, Best of luck to you! I am working on that exact dream right now, too! I am just farther behind in skill than you. Sounds like you have what it takes to make it, and I hope you do! I would love it if you would possibly provide suggestions as again you seem to have some great experience from which I could benefit.

Ray, As a beginning golfer, you have demonstrated a knack for the game. I know you are reading books, paging through magazines, and watching the Golf Channel. Avoid paralysis by analysis, and allow your natural ability shine. Lessons with a single PGA Professional will help. When you’re ready, enter local tournaments to begin testing your game. In golf, patience is a virtue. My best advice is to have fun. Good luck to you! Phil
